Figh Waves and Wind
We launched from the clubhouse at 10AM, there were six of us, all experienced kayakers. There were Peter, Steve, Stevie, Chris, Tony, and myself. I get on a farmer John wetsuit, with cyling undershirt, and fleeces underneight a dry top. I also wear my watershoe. It was hot underneight all the clothing.
We went out to Raffle Bar, make a short landing to stretch, then decide to the north of the marsh and hook around to visit the Rockaway 9/11 Memorial. It was a bit dixy even then. We ran into weird wave and high wind as we approach the sea wall. I was so glad when we finally get there. The Memorial have brick pathway, flowers garden and several convenience stores near by. I did not brough any food with me. Big mistake. I get dry fruit and M&M from Chris. Jen and Maury stop by. They see me walk to the near by gas station garbage can. They do not know we would be there. Jen and Maury were in the area looking a a sofa. It was a big coincidences.
We started home at about 2PM. We kayaked along the Rockaway Seawall, hiding from the wind and wave. But the way only take us so far, we proceed west, bringing us into the wind and wave. It was changing just to keep the boat pointing in the right direction. I was tire the first 30 minutes into the return journey. We managed to get to the southern side of raffle bar, we land there again to rest and take bathroom break. The tides were coming in, so our boat keep on floating away from the beach. After much discussion we decide instead of going to the far end of Canarsie Pol western tip we decide to cut to the closer eastern tip, hoping to get away from the wind and waves as we went on the lee side. It was rough trying to get to Canarsie Pol.
Tony capsided. I was near by but was unable to fight the wave and wind to get to him. Chris and Steve get him back in his boat. We did proceed to the eastern top and around. Steve was way ahead of the whole back. I was very frustrated that I am not able to close the gap between myself and the leader, Steve. Steve seem to just power on as I fight with all my strenght to control my boat.
I was very angry that Steve is setting of by himself with out consider condition of the rest of us. On the last leg to the Paeraget Bridge, I was haveing alot of difficulties seeing because the sun was setting in my face, so all I can see was the shadow of Chris and Steve pulling away then disappear while I am still in the motor boat channel. I don't know what I would have done if there was a motorboat that I have to deal with. I start to developed stomach gramp as I try all I can to fight the winds. I thought serously that I may have to beach and rest before proceed the last couple hundred of feet to the club's dock. We get back to dock by 4:30 PM.
I just soak in a hot bath to make to pain go away. Every muscle aches. It was challenging. I was not expecting it to be that hard and frankly was a bit out of shape for that kind of trip. I don't know if I would do it again, espectually in the cold water
14 miles
6 hours
15-20 winds
2-3 foot wave

Going up the River
We get everything loaded up and left at 8:45AM. Tony give Michael a left up to the lauch site at Atlantic Kayak in the Peekskill, across from Bear Mountain. Tony have his own route up there that I am not familiar with so I did not follow him. Me, Pete and Stevie left a couple of minutes after Tony did. We went straight up Flatbush to Brooklyn Bridge. I never understand why Pete always insist on cutting through the local street, through all the stoplights and double parked cars when we could have just went on the highway. Needless to say we were the last to arrive, by at least 30 minutes if not more.
We unload and change at AKT. Atlantic is tour and kayaking training outfit that we have extend and good relationship with. We were in the water by 11:30. I was a bit uncertain when I side down the lauch slot at the dock. I have not be in my kayak for almost a month.
Contrary to weather report there was not gale force wind. It is too bad that the false report lead to so may cancelation. Tony, who organized the trip expected at least 20 people to come but all toget only 7 people actually show up. Beside the 5 of us that come up from Sebago, there is Josh - a new member I have not meet till today, and Hally(don't know if that her actual name)-nice lady. We paddled down river along the cost till the red buoy, cross that and went along the coast to the foot of Bear Mountain Bridge. On the other side is a railroad bridge. We went under it and come across to a quiet brook. We paddled up the brook, under a suspended foot bridge and further upriver under another highway bridge till we get to a loud, raging rapid. Further up pass that rapid is the water fall that we come all the way down the rive to see. It was an impressive site but we can't get close enough to see it. The running water and no landing site force us to go back down river to find landable site for lunch. We Come back to the footbridge anchorage to find a place to beach. The only place was not ideal but just barely doable. I cringe when I though of the dange that the rocks could do to my delicated boat(problem with have a pretty fiberglass boat).
We landed, and sit down for lunch next to the bridge ramp when Tony come up and make us repack our lunch. We were made to walk up a steep hill bath(with water running down on part of it) to a hold fort, Frt Mongomery and Frt Clinton. There was not much of a fort. We walk up to the present day wooden platform with on big cannon and two smaller cannon. It do not do the site justice. From the randering, the fort was much more impressive then the historic recontraction show. We have lunch there, most of the crop sitting on the rock next the the platform. I used the platform itself as my table, take off my water boots and drain out the water. I am glad that I brough hot tea. It was cold after the heat of paddle wear off.
After lunch we paddle back, retracing our routes. I did lead us into a couple of turn off just to see where it would goes. Nothing interesting. We get back to AKT by 3:30PM. We change and load up our boats. Tony make reservation for dinner at a local dinner at 5:45PM so we have time to waste. AKT also run a store so we were were 7 adults in a candy store. I manage to just get two essential items, a paddled keeper and a sponge - $40.05. The dinner was just around the traffic circle. I get there without and mishap - I hate traffic circle.

Kayaking Trip Leader
I did get to the club without any mishap thought. There are about 12 people there. I was not paying must attention. There are more restriction this summer then on the previous summers. We have to us the VHF to signal our whereabout, can take groups across the channel. I went across the shipping channel on my first trip out when I join, not we can't go that far anymore. If I want a challenge that mean going out along. I will have to do more solo kayaking rather then groups because its going to be a bummer.
I have to take class on rescue and practice my eskimo rescue.
I am not excited about this season for some reason, so many changes.

Weekend Summary
Sebago Club opener, same faces attended the meeting.
The weather is overcast with some instance of heavy rain. The fog started to flow in, visibility was limited. Several adventurous members went out in kayak but no official group was organized.
Festivities were held in the clubhouse. The old woodstove was sufficient to keep everyone warm. People as usual brought lot of salad, pasta salad, potatoe salad and several with I do no know since I did not try them.
Coldwater workshop started at 1pm. It was very informative. Even thought I have not kayak in coldwater yet, it nice to know what to expect and know the danger.
VHF and GPS workshop were somewhat disorganize, even thought Eric and his wife(?) was very helpful about the operation of VHF and it procedure. I went to purchase myself on from the internet for $129 +13 shipping for total of $145. GPS was cancel do to time.
We have the general meeting early, 2:30 Instead of schedule 4 PM. Phil, as usual run the meeting with theater efficiency. I announced my willingness to volunteer for OOD Coordination position. Have to get to work organizing the time slot and volunteers for every slot we have from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Wednesday and weekend. Meeting end by 3:30, call sister for pick up.
Sunday, May 2, 2005
Wakeup late. Did not get to the club till 12:15. Phil and Pete are there already. Spend much of day moving garbage from pile in front of clubhouse to dumpster. Have an incident with Wheel barrel. Get hit on face with handle as it come down when I try to flip and dumped the garbage into dumpster. Was not as bad as I thought. Get just a bruise, with no injury to eye.
Left at 3:15 PM.

Kayak experience and personal History
I started Kayaking 3 years ago very much by accident. I have been going through several summer of just wasting my time and feeling sorry for myself because my weekend usually involve staying in home, walking my dog and talking long run. Searching the Internet for Hiking and outdoor activities I happened onto a website for Sebago Canoe Club. As it was my luck, they are having an open house the coming week. It is not too far from my house.
The club is tucked into a small artificial bay; the only way to get there is by car or by bus. I did not have a car at the time so getting there involve taking a bus north, then taking another bus east all the way to the end of the line, all together a one hour trip. By car it’s a 30 minutes ride.
I was interested in sailing when I get down there that first day. It turn out the sailing program is not fully restored yet, and there was a kayaking group going out. That how I get into kayaking. My first time in a kayak was a bit frightening; I have never been in a boat – except my childhood experience of fleeting Vietnam in a leaking boat.
The water is not in the condition that one would ever want to fall into. I make a couple of mistake on my first trip out; I did not have water (was not prepare to go out on my first day), no hat, and importantly no suntan.
Let fast forward. I took Star I and Star II my second year at our cabin in Sebago Lake, Harriman Park in upstate New York. I failed my first attempt at getting certified for Star II. I retook star I and star II again the next year and pass. Last year was somewhat of a bust; I went kayaking, but not as often as I want nor as challenging as I want it to be. I did learn how to do an Eskimo roll, but do not have any practice since leaving the pool.
So for this year, these are the things that I would like to accomplish or try.
- Get certified for Canoe Safety – this will qualify me to lead trip and take friends out kayaking who are not member of the club.
- Practice rescue and roll at least a dozen time this season.
- Spend more time at our cabin a ACA camping area.
- Take more extensive regional trips, there are a lot of river in the north east, there is no excuse to be home on a weekend.
- Go out on unofficial trip with other members of the club, most importantly, initiate ideas where to go and organize trip.
Kayaking Season Is Finally Here
I am not a fan of cold weather paddling, too much preparation and clothing are need, and I do not like cold weather to start with.
Here to an eventful and fun summer.
